A Message From ezKarma
“Perhaps there are those who are able to go about their lives unfettered by such concerns. But for those like us, our fate is to face the world as orphans, chasing through long years the shadows of vanished parents. There is nothing for it but to try and see through our missions to the end, as best we can, for until we do so, we will be permitted no calm.”
― Kazuo Ishiguro, When We Were Orphans
ezKarma couldn’t be more proud and honored to support Dr. Kiran Modi and her team at Udayan Care. Udayan is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘eternal sunshine.’ True to this, Udayan Care has provided since 1994 sunshine in the lives of children who are either orphaned or abandoned. Not many may know this but Udayan was the name of Dr. Modi’s son who she lost most tragically in an accident while he was pursuing his studies in the US. Udayan was only 21.
Unbeknownst to her, Udayan was saving money from his part-time jobs, and sending to support children in Africa. Since then, Dr. Modi has devoted her life selflessly to the care of orphaned and underprivileged children, several of them who have gone on to some of the best colleges in the India. You will understand somewhat why we at ezKarma admire and respect her so much.
It has been shocking to know there are 31 million orphans in India. Udayan Care is providing a sanctuary for these bright and brave children and most of all hope and courage that they too will lead the best life possible, notwithstanding the circumstances fate has bestowed on them.
We hope very much that you will take a moment to share this campaign (on social media, WhatsApp, emails and however else possible) with family, friends, colleagues and so that we can raise the maximum possible funds and awareness in support of the mission and purpose of Udayan Care. You will make a tremendous difference in the lives of those who most need it. THANK YOU for your kindness, THANK YOU for your support.
First of all I would like to extend my gratitude towards ezKarma for providing such an interesting and innovative platform to the donors and NGOs like us, who are trying to raise funds for their programs and at the same time, rewarding the donors. Through this platform, we are reaching out to all of you to support our girls’ higher education program - Udayan Shalini Fellowship (USF). In India, girls’ education is often considered the lowest priority, in particular girl’s higher education. According to current transition rates, a girl who enters her final year of primary education (typically Class V) still only has a 54% chance of even starting Class XI. This does not even include girls who drop out during primary school or never attend school at all! The highest percentage of girls drops out between Class X and Class XI. Only 68% of girls who enter Class X move on to Class XI (NUEPA 2015).All of this adds up to stack the deck against a girl acquiring a degree and reaching her potential. To address these issues, Udayan Care is running the USF program in 19 cities in 13 states where a girl’s education from class XI to graduation is supported. In addition to financial help, each girl is provided with regular sessions on personality development and soft skills. Additionally, each girl gets a mentor who can coach and guide the girl in meeting the life challenges as well as career guidance. Every girl has to do 50 hours of mandatory social work too. We need support from people like you to ensure more of these young girls are being empowered and become Shalinis, achieve what they aspire to by providing them with higher education, indeed, wings so that they can FLY…..and achieve their dreams.
